Editorial Reviews
Review
This illustrated self-help guide to back pain is a compendium of sensible advice including how best to sit or drive, what to expect from physiotherapy, osteopathy, acupuncture, various drugs and injections, and the benefits and risks of surgery. Most useful for those with chronic back pain unresponsive to treatment will be the chapters on good posture and strengthening exercises as these can alleviate back pain much of the time. As Tanner is a private practitioner in orthopaedic and sports medicine, therefore with wide experience, he recognises that traditional medical treatment often cannot help, and talks through the impact of emotional and psychological stress on the back, the value of relaxation and massage, and the cases most suited to alternative remedies like meditation, hypnotherapy and the Alexander Technique.
About the Author
Expert advice from the author, Dr John Tanner, who runs clinics in the UK, is a member of the British Holistic Medical Association, and is also on the councils of both the Society and the Institute of Orthopaedic Medicine.
Customer Reviews
I LOVE this book and DVD.
I was a bit overwhelmed at first thinking I had to review and figure out every single exercise before starting so I just stuck the DVD in. Most exercises were easy to follow with the model and the ones that were a bit tricky I just looked up in the book.
As I'm recovering from a back injury I'm taking it slow and can only do 1 or 2 of the sessions at a time, but I can see doing all in the future for a nice workout. The moves are only repeated a few times so if one is particularly difficult you know it won't last forever!
Amazon reviews are confusing 2 books
Above this review it says: "this review is from 15 Minute Better Back Workout"...this is part of an error on Amazon's part.
There is a book/DVD by Suzanne Martin titled "15 Minute Better Back Workout" and a book titled "Better Back" by John Tanner. As of 4/19/10, reviews offered for Martin's book somehow automatically appear under Tanner's book (as well as Martin's). And book reviews offered for Tanner's book appear for Martin's book (as well as Tanner's). Reviews under BOTH book listings are given the subtitle: "this review is from 15 Minute Better Back Workout".
As of this date, all reviews listed under Tanner's book, except this review, are actually related to Martin's book. Furthermore, under Martin's book the information under "Editorial Review" is not correct. The first part, "Review" refers to Tanner's book (it even mentions his name). The second part, "Product Description" appears to relate, appropriately, to Martin's book.
This was all very confusing to me until I figured out what was happening.
Both Martin's book/dvd (which draws, at least in part, from her pilates and physical therapy training) and Tanner's book appear to be very good. I just received Tanner's book. Since every other review (as of 4/19/10) relates to Martin's book, I'll say a few words about Tanner's It discusses the healthy back, causes of back pain, manipulation, drugs and surgery, exercises, posture and everyday activities, and coping with chronic pain. The book is beautifully illustrated and has 23 pages related to exercises. For each type of back condition or injury, he lists the exercises best (1) during acute attack, (2) after sever pain, and (3) for prevention. Dr. Tanner is a practitioner in orthopedic and sports medicine. I give it 5 stars.
Great deal and great workout!
I have several books with exercises for the back, the this is my first back exercises book with a dvd. It's a great deal for both. The exercises are clear and easy to understand. There are also four levels, which is helpful. No glitzy production, but a true find.
